The journey of recovery from chronic or persistent pain often contains ups and downs, with occasional flare ups and set backs. This is normal but can leave you feeling very negative and increase pain levels again. One of the things that helps is to read others’ recovery stories again to inspire you. Books I recommend ….

If you are on the journey of resolving your chronic pain and understanding the Mind-Body process there are a number of good books I recommend that will educate you and inspire you. Here is a list below of the ones that have helped my Clients to start to appreciate the factors involved and to learn from other people’s journeys. There are many more. The book icons will take you to sites where you can order them.

Heal Chronic Pain: The Way Out by Alan Gordon. This is a light hearted and humorous yet informative easy read about the causes of chronic pain and how to heal it using a method he has developed called Pain Reprocessing Therapy, which helped 98% of the patients who participated.

Chronic pain your key to recovery by Georgie Oldfield. This book by the creator of SIRPA, the mindbody profession in the UK is comprehensive and straightforward and packed with education, case studies and practical tools for healing chronic pain and other stress illnesses.

The Mindbody Prescription by John E Sarno, M.D. This helpful book is by the spinal surgeon who started the whole mindbody movement in the U.S.. He discusses how many painful conditions are rooted in repressed emotions and shows how they can be successfully treated without drugs, physical measures or surgery.

Back in Control by David Hanscom MD. This book highlights the importance of calming your nervous system in order to recover from chronic pain and the neuroscience research showing the relationship between decreased anxiety and lower levels of pain.

When The Body Says No by Gabor Mate. This book draws on deep scientific research and his acclaimed clinical work. It provides the answers to critical questions about the mind-body link and the role that stress and our emotional makeup play in the development of common diseases.

Think Away Your pain by David Schechter M.D. This book is based on Dr Schecters 25 years in the field of teaching the TMS healing method , where changing thought, expressing feelings and understanding can change the brain and eliminate pain. He also discusses the research.

Unlearn Your Pain by Howard Schubiner M.D. explains the science behind chronic pain in a common sense way and lays out a clear, step by step program, supported by the latest research which anyone can follow to free themselves of chronic pain.

My Migraine Breakthrough by Lee Canter is the description of his personal journey of recovery from severe migraines using an evidence based mind body approach. He also has a non profit organization to reach as many migraine sufferers as possible which lists further resources.
